True mediumship lies not in unconsciousness, but in clarity and a conscious connection with the spiritual plane.
This time, I would like to answer some questions from the sons and daughters of our house who are mediums, as well as from friends, admirers, and lovers of Umbanda’s teachings.
I want to discuss a subject that still causes much controversy and confusion among many mediums. I have addressed it several times when opening our spiritual work and also in the official Ilê Axé Luz de Odara handbook, though in a more basic way. So I will once again try to explain conscious and unconscious mediumship more clearly.
Unfortunately, many people do not seek guidance from those who truly understand the subject. They stop studying and do not try to understand their own abilities. Out of fear or even vanity, they end up claiming to be unconscious mediums.
In my view, spirituality today no longer works as it once did, with the famous table-turning phenomena and physical manifestations of that kind. Today, greater awareness is sought in mediums, as they are already more spiritually advanced and evolved.
It is something like this: in the early days, spiritual manifestations, such as tables moving without being touched, sparked people’s interest in spirituality. Today, the experience is different. Just notice what happens when you consult a preto-velho.
You sit down and gradually realize that you are in the presence of an extremely wise spiritual entity. It is like consulting a specialist in a particular field. You leave with clear guidance, almost like “prescriptions,” and when you put it into practice, you see quick results in your life.
Even so, they always stress that conventional medicine must not be disregarded. When necessary, they advise you to seek medical help as well.
As they say simply and affectionately:
“Look, my child, if you need to, go and see the man in the white coat.”
