Between addictions and affinities: how spiritual obsession begins

Spiritual obsession arises from the attunement of habits, thoughts, and choices. More than fighting another, we need to transform ourselves with awareness, discipline, and love.

Spiritual obsession is one of the greatest afflictions of our time, and conventional medicine has no cure for it.

Although we are supported by the kindness of spiritual teachers and guides, who forgive us for a less worthy past, we cannot ignore our own weaknesses. That is why we are often led to request new reincarnations, difficult yet fruitful ones, to help us learn anew and bring us closer to the redemption we need during our time on Earth.

Considered the affliction of the century, obsession is undoubtedly one of the most discussed subjects in Spiritist and Umbanda centers. Even so, little is understood about the mysteries surrounding the obsessing spirit and the person affected, making both the treatment of the obsessing entity and proper guidance for the incarnate person who feels harmed more difficult.

Most of the time, the incarnate person suffering this influence does not cooperate with their own treatment. On the contrary, they provide the obsessing spirit with the means to remain, creating a bond that feeds addictions, desires, and passions.

The invisible threads connecting the oppressor to the victim are formed by our mistakes, moral weaknesses, and the imperfections we still nurture within ourselves.

Various scholars, philosophers, and spiritual thinkers define obsession as a fixed idea, persecution, or even a plan for revenge connected to past mistakes.

More recent studies, however, allow us to understand it as a true spiritual symbiosis: an association of tendencies, habits, and affinities between two parties connected by what they share in the vibrational field.

An old proverb says: “nothing can happen to you unless you want it to.” This leads us to reflect that, in some way, we provide the means for an obsessing spirit to act, mainly through our moral shortcomings, which are reflected in our aura.

The obsessing spirit, in turn, is a sick and often wounded soul that also needs spiritual treatment. And the best way to help it is through love. Contempt, indifference, or rejection only intensify the hatred and suffering of the spirit involved.

Obsession does not occur only between disincarnate and incarnate beings. It can happen between disincarnate beings, between incarnate beings, or in any relationship involving a continuous exchange of energy.

When we offer another person the worst of ourselves, we invade their field and break with Jesus’ teaching: to be the salt of the earth, always offering the best of ourselves.

The process of obsession begins subtly, almost imperceptibly, with small suggestions in the mental field. Over time, these influences intensify, leading to control over thoughts and emotions.

There are clear signs that someone may be entering a process of spiritual obsession:

  • constant impatience and irritability
  • shifting responsibilities onto others
  • escaping reality through addictions (gambling, alcohol, drugs, uncontrolled sexual behavior)
  • a constant feeling of being overwhelmed
  • laziness, discouragement, and melancholy
  • malicious gossip, envy, jealousy, and corruption
  • pride, selfishness, vanity, and arrogance
  • greed
  • violent behavior, whether physical, verbal, or mental

In Umbanda houses, treatment should take place on two fronts.

The first focuses on incarnate beings, who need to recognize the need to change their habits, cultivate prayer and quiet reflection, and abandon everything that attracts lower energies.

The second focuses on disincarnate beings, allowing them to manifest so that they can be guided, taught, and directed onward with love, understanding, and awareness of their mistakes.

Through his manifestations, Pai Francisco da Guiné has helped heal many cases. And he has always left a clear teaching: “go, and do not make the same mistakes again.”

This reveals that the process of obsession is often connected to past actions, and repeating a mistake can further worsen the spiritual situation.

That is why, after any healing process, it is essential to remain vigilant, disciplined, and committed to goodness.

We live in a time when addictions, excesses, corruption, and imbalance have become commonplace, even in places that should be sacred.

In light of this, it is up to us, as Umbanda practitioners, to remain steadfast, aware, and prepared for this constant struggle, which is not against people but against lower vibrational patterns.

Transformation begins within each of us.
